Mahendra retired as the Vice Chairman of Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) in 2007. He headed the responsibility for functions like HR, Legal & Secretarial, Corporate Affairs, Corporate Communications and Corporate Real Estate in his 33-year long tenure with the company. Additionally, he also handled M&A activities relating to acquisition of companies in the food & beverages segment.
He also played a key role in the corporate restructuring of the Unilever Group in India which culminated in the creation of One Unilever. He served on the seven-member committee constituted by the Government of India for redrafting the Companies Act and was also a member of the Naresh Chandra committee which formulated norms for corporate governance. He also serves on the boards of several reputed companies.
A Bachelor’s in Arts and Law from the University of Lucknow, he has completed his post-graduate Diploma in Personnel Management from Delhi University. He followed this with another Diploma in Labour Laws from The Indian Law Institute, Delhi.
